Driving along the scenic Indian River Lagoon
The Indian River Lagoon, stretching along Florida’s Atlantic Coast, offers a unique and picturesque landscape worth exploring. While many are drawn to the beach and the scenic A1A, the western shore of the lagoon provides a different experience. This 20-mile stretch between Stuart and Fort Pierce is a haven for Old Florida charm and scenic beauty.
Start in Stuart in Sewall’s Point on Indian River Drive. As you head north, you’ll drive through a lovely residential island only a few blocks wide. With the Indian River Lagoon to the east, check out the mansions as you head north. As you approach Jensen Beach, you pass through a few blocks of picturesque cottages, many painted tropical colors and looking like a scene from Florida in the 1950s.
Downtown Jensen Beach
The historic riverfront downtown area is home to shops, galleries, and restaurants that exude an Old Florida charm. Check out Mulligans Beach House cafe, which sets the tone with its outdoor seating along the sidewalk. For a local vibe, stop by Lure’s Restaurant and Bar featuring an outdoor bar where the Jensen Beach locals and snowbirds alike hang out Two blocks north of downtown Jensen Beach, don’t miss the iconic Conchy Joe’s Seafood, a waterfront restaurant known for its spectacular lagoon views, local seafood, and reggae music.
The scenic road between Jensen Beach and Fort Pierce
Continuing along the scenic road between Jensen Beach and Fort Pierce, you’ll be immersed in the essence of Old Florida. The 15-mile stretch features a mix of cottages and mansions, without the presence of high-rises or condos.
Explore Savannas State Park
For a refreshing break, consider exploring Savannas Preserve State Park, located a short distance from the road. This park preserves a 10-mile section of extensive freshwater marshes, which once spanned Florida’s southeast coast. Enjoy the park’s trail system, with highlights such as the Hawks Bluff Trail, offering a one-mile hike with distinct habitats. The park also houses a nature center that provides insights into Jensen Beach’s history as the “Pineapple Capital of the World.”
Fort Pierce City Marina
A must-visit stop near Fort Pierce is the City Marina, situated at the base of downtown. Here, you can relax and soak in the views of the lagoon, observe fishing boats, and even spot manatees if you’re lucky. The marina serves as a launching point for boat tours into the lagoon, where you can discover dolphins, manatees, and various bird species. Consider taking the Indian River Lagoon and Swampland Boat Tours, which offer informative commentary on the region’s history and the lagoon’s ecology.
Little Jim’s Bait & Tackle on the North Beach Causeway
For an authentic Florida experience, make sure to visit Little Jim’s Bridge Bait & Tackle. This historic fish camp, located on the North Beach Causeway, dates back to World War II when it served as a guard shack and checkpoint. Today, it offers a charming atmosphere, delicious seafood, and live music on select afternoons. You can also rent kayaks from Little Jim’s and explore the wildlife-rich waters and shores of the lagoon.
The long, wide Indian River Lagoon leaves a sliver of land for hundreds of miles along Florida’s Atlantic Coast. Naturally, we are drawn to the beach and scenic A1A.
But the other side of the Indian River Lagoon is worth exploring too. And because the lagoon is wide enough to discourage the building of lots of bridges, the western shore is a different world from the beach communities. You’ll find an Old Florida scenic driver here on the 20 miles between Stuart and Fort Pierce.
Both Jensen Beach and Fort Pierce have enough interesting places to explore to make this region a worthwhile daytrip or weekend destination.
