Stuart was first settled in 1870. It was originally named Potsdam by two German brothers who settled here from Potsdam, Germany. The two brothers, Otto and Ernest Stypmann, owned what is now known as “Downtown Stuart” and were large landowners. They started their fortunes here in pineapple farming. The name of the town was changed to Stuart after the FEC railroad was established and was named after Homer Hine Stuart, Jr., another early settler.

Boaters have lots of outstanding spots to venture out on the water. The Saint Lucie River runs through Stuart as it heads out of the nearby St. Lucie Inlet. Paddleboarders like myself as well as kayakers have lots of places to venture on the St. Lucie River.
Families are especially fond of the fun activities like the Stuart Splash Waterpark. There's the Elliott Museum which has a wide variety of collections including classic cars, bikes, boats and trucks. There's a sports lover's collection of baseball memorabilia and lots of local history to soak up about the Treasure Coast.
