Ft. Pierce, Florida

Sand and Sun by the Sea

Welcome to Fort Pierce, Florida

Fort Pierce has a rich and diverse history as one of the oldest coastal communities in Florida. The United States established a military fort, Fort Pierce in 1838. Afterwards, it grew into a small fishing village. The arrival of the Florida East Coast Railway in 1893 led to significant growth and development in the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1901.

During the early 20th century, Fort Pierce experienced economic prosperity with the establishment of the citrus industry. It became a major shipping point for citrus fruits. The city also attracted winter tourists who came for the mild climate and recreational activities.

Fort Pierce played a significant role in World War II as a training center for the U.S. Navy. The Naval Amphibious Training Base was established in 1944, training thousands of Navy personnel. The Navy Seals program began during that time.

Also known as the Sunrise City, Fort Pierce covers about 31 square miles. Folks hoping to be residents here will find homes in every type and price range that our current residential market in Florida offers. If you are looking for a small town atmosphere with proximity to lots of beaches while being a few hours away from the big cities of Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Miami, then Fort Pierce may be your slice of paradise.

Dining Options With A Small Town Flavor

Ready to grab a bite? Casual dining is the name of the game in this laid back fishing village. Check out local favorites such as Chuck's Steak House with a great water view out on the South Causeway and nearby  12A Buoy just west of the South Causeway for great seafood. There's Cobb's Landing by the downtown marina and the Taco Dive in the nearby historic downtown area. Looking for something sweet made locally? There's Dixie Cream Donuts on Orange Ave and Donut Circus on Federal Highway for a quick bite before you head to the beach in the morning. Whether you are paddling out to surf or just taking a quiet stroll on North Hutchinson Island looking for shells, that morning cup of coffee is critical.

Local Lifestyle

Fort Pierce offers a vibrant and laid-back lifestyle with a touch of coastal charm. Situated on Florida's Treasure Coast, this community of approximately 46,000 residents embodies a relaxed atmosphere combined with a range of recreational opportunities. The city enjoys a pleasant climate year-round, with warm temperatures and ample sunshine.

Living in Fort Pierce means embracing the coastal lifestyle. Residents can explore beautiful beaches, indulge in water sports such as boating, fishing, and surfing, or simply relax and soak up the sun. The city boasts an active arts and cultural scene, with galleries, theaters, and live music venues offering entertainment options for all tastes.

Things to Do

There's a variety of things to do for adults and those with kids in Fort Pierce. One of my favorite local surf breaks is at Fort Pierce Inlet State Park. You might even see one of our beloved natives there, the gopher tortoise. Across the inlet is Jetty Park which is also a favorite fishing spot. Fun educational choices to intrigue both kids and parents alike are the FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and the Manatee Observations & Education Center. There's also Pepper Park Beach near the Navy Seal Museum. One of the ships from the 1715 Spanish Fleet lies offshore from this park. This shipwreck is now part of the Urca de Lima Archaeological Preserve about 200 yards from the shoreline.
